Where are DIP switches commonly used in electronic devices

DIP switches, short for Dual In - line Package Switches, are widely used in multiple types of electronic devices for their simplicity and reliability in hardware configuration. Here are some common application scenarios:

  • Industrial Automation: DIP switches are crucial for setting parameters in industrial devices. In Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), they are used to set the station addresses of Modbus slaves. They can also be used for range selection of sensors, like configuring the output range of a pressure sensor to 0 - 5V or 0 - 10V.

  • Consumer Electronics: They were applied in older - model game cartridges to switch between NTSC and PAL systems. In some routers, DIP switches were formerly used to set the third segment of the IP address or to choose between AP and routing modes.

  • Communication Equipment: In radio walkie - talkies, DIP switches are engaged in channel encoding, which is used to set binary frequency - offset parameters. They are also used to enable or disable the CAN - bus termination resistors, helping to ensure stable communication signal transmission.

  • Medical Devices: DIP switches are adopted to adjust the operating modes and parameters of medical equipment to meet different medical requirements. For instance, they can be used to set the sampling frequency and filtering mode in electrocardiographs.
