Barrel-type DC Power Jack

DC power jack/connector. This is a common barrel-type power jack for DC wall supplies. These are compatible with our DC wall supplies and have a 5.5mm jack, with a 2.1mm center pole diameter. The standard dc barrel plug or jack has two conductors, one each for power and ground. The convention is for the centre pin to be power and the outer sleeve to be ground, but reversing the connections is acceptable, DC power jack are still a serviceable standard in powering smaller appliances. They can typically be used with certain portable computers, electronic instruments, and sound systems.

Although there are various types of DC power jack Connector, the most common type is sometimes referred to as a Barrel dc jack Connector. This style of connector features an insulated cylindrical tip, sometimes called a sleeve, or ring, which accepts a pin from the socket counterpart. This design ensures a safe and secure connection, with a smooth disconnect and connect action.

A barrel-type DC power jack, also known as a barrel connector or DC power plug, is a common type of electrical connector used to transmit direct current (DC) power between electronic devices and their power sources. These connectors are cylindrical in shape and consist of a male plug and a female jack.

Here are the key features of a barrel-type DC power jack:

  • Cylindrical Shape: The connector typically has a cylindrical shape, with a central pin (male) and an outer barrel (female). This design allows for a secure and stable connection.

  • Positive and Negative Terminals: The central pin usually carries the positive voltage, while the outer barrel serves as the negative or ground connection. This configuration helps ensure correct polarity during power transmission.

  • Different Sizes: Barrel connectors come in various sizes, with different outer and inner diameters. The size is often specified in millimeters and is an important consideration to ensure compatibility between devices.

  • Various Polarity Configurations: While the central pin is usually positive and the outer barrel negative, some barrel connectors may have reverse polarity configurations. It's crucial to check the polarity markings and ensure compatibility with the connected devices.

  • Common Uses: Barrel-type DC power jacks are commonly used in electronic devices such as laptops, routers, audio equipment, and other gadgets that require an external power source. They are also prevalent in power adapters and chargers.

  • Plug and Play Design: The plug-and-play design of barrel connectors simplifies the process of connecting and disconnecting devices. Users can easily insert the plug into the jack without the need for additional tools.

  • Applications: Barrel connectors are used in a wide range of applications, including powering electronic devices, charging batteries, and providing a convenient means for connecting external power sources.

When working with barrel connectors, it's essential to pay attention to the voltage and current ratings to ensure that the power supply matches the requirements of the connected device. Additionally, ensuring the correct polarity is crucial to prevent damage to the device being powered.
