What Is an Illuminated Tactile Switch and Why Is It Used

An illuminated tactile switch is an advanced electronic component that blends dual-sensory communication—physical and visual—into a single, compact device footprint. Broadly utilized across modern user interfaces, this component acts as a momentary push-button switch. It triggers an electrical signal exclusively when actively depressed by an operator. What elevates this hardware above traditional components is its integration of a tiny, built-in LED right beneath or around the actuator casing. This architecture eliminates the requirement for separate, bulky LED indicator assemblies on PCBs.

1. Dual-Feedback Mechanism

The defining attribute of an illuminated tact switch is its multi-sensory feedback. When a user applies downward force onto the button's actuator, an internal metal dome structures flexes and snaps into place. This abrupt deflection creates a clean, audible "click" feedback and a mechanical resistance, confirming to the finger that an input registration has started. Simultaneously, the integrated LED supplies immediate illumination. Engineers can customize the electrical wiring layout so that the light communicates different modes. It can shine constantly as a backlighting guide, blink dynamically, or illuminate solely upon actuation to verify active status.

Manufacturers engineer these illuminated interfaces to satisfy highly diverse industrial footprints and operating environments. They are commonly packaged in standardized, space-saving dimensions such as 6×6 mm or 15×15 mm profiles. Depending on PCB assembly constraints, hardware designers select between:
