Wiring an LED tact switch is simple once you know which pins control the switch and which pins power the LED. Before connecting it to a PCB or circuit, it is important to identify the pin layout and check the datasheet.
1. Identify the Pins
Most LED tact switches have separate pins for the switch and LED. The switch pins are used to connect or break the circuit, while the LED pins are used to turn on the indicator light.
Start by checking the product drawing or datasheet. If there is no clear marking, use a multimeter to identify the terminals. Set the meter to continuity mode and press the button. The pins that show continuity when pressed are the switch terminals.
For the LED pins, check the polarity. The positive pin is usually marked as the anode (+), while the negative pin is the cathode (-).
2. Connect the Switch
Connect one switch pin to the power supply or signal line and the other pin to the load or control input. When the tact switch is pressed, the contacts close and allow the signal to pass.
For a PCB-mounted illuminated tact switch, make sure the pin spacing and orientation match the PCB footprint before soldering.
3. Connect the LED
The LED needs the correct voltage and polarity. Connect the anode to the positive supply and the cathode to ground. If the LED does not have a built-in resistor, add a suitable current-limiting resistor to prevent damage.
4. Test Before Use
After wiring, check the connections carefully. Press the button and confirm that the switch works correctly and that the LED lights as expected.
