Surface-mount (SMT) illuminated tact switches are highly sensitive to heat during the reflow soldering process. If the reflow temperature is set too high, the heating time is too long, or the conveyor speed is too slow, the switch can be exposed to excessive thermal stress. This may cause the internal plastic housing to soften, deform, or warp.
When the housing changes shape, the metal dome inside the switch may no longer sit in its correct position. In some cases, the dome can become flat, stuck, or slightly misaligned. As a result, the switch may lose its normal tactile feedback and stop producing the familiar clicking sound immediately after reflow.
To avoid this problem, engineers should follow the switch manufacturer's recommended reflow profile. Temperature, heating time, conveyor speed, and the number of reflow cycles should all be controlled carefully. It is also important to check the switch after soldering to make sure the actuator moves smoothly and the tactile response remains consistent.
For SMT illuminated tact switches, proper thermal control is not only important for protecting the LED but also for maintaining the mechanical performance of the switch.
