Latched illuminated buttons are electronic components that combine the functionality of a latching switch with integrated illumination.; The primary feature of latched illuminated buttons is their latching operation. Unlike momentary switches that return to their original state upon release, latched switches maintain their toggled state until actuated again. This feature is beneficial for applications where a specific setting or function needs to be maintained, such as power on/off or mode selection.

The illumination function of a latching illuminated tact switch adds an extra layer of usability and aesthetics to the component. The light emission is usually provided by a small LED that is embedded within the switch body or cap. The LED can be configured to emit light in different colors such as blue, green, red, or yellow, depending on the purpose of the switch. For example, a blue LED may indicate that a device is powered on, while a red LED may indicate that an error has occurred.

The latching mechanism of a latching illuminated tact switch is critical to its functionality. The switch needs to maintain the ON or OFF state until the user presses it again, where it should toggle to the opposite state. The latching mechanism usually consists of two spring-loaded contacts that click into place when the plunger is pressed. The contacts lock into position to ensure that the switch remains in its current state until the user presses it again. The latching mechanism can be designed to provide either a soft or hard click, depending on the desired tactile feel.
